One of the bad things about being in a thick culture like Israel is they will sacrifice you for "the greater good". The tribe or nation comes first. The individual comes second. Israel doesn't care about hostages. Israel is on a civilizational mission.
But the US is a thin culture country. Everything is transactional. If i get kidnapped, the government has to get me back. that's the civic contract. There is no greater good here. We're just paying taxes and going to work.
