The more I force myself to use midnight commander, the more features I discover, and the more i like it!
I think it is really impressive software for being released in 1994 and it does make me a lot faster in my day to day job.
I think it really does pay to actually learn this old programs, instead of reaching for the latest and greatest (and slow) javascript or electron apps.

Very few people ever think outside that predefined box. And of the ones who do, very few have the chance to actually take the risk to try it.
It is sad, but socialism has beaten any acceptance of risk out of so many human beings, that they prefer to remain slaves to the state over any ounce of risk taking, with potential big rewards.

This is very interesting. I think this is a good example of a "mental prison". You are trained from an early age to get a career. Work hard, advance through the ranks, and your reward will come when you become a manager.
I would say that this mind ghost affects most, if not all, people in western europe and the parts of asia that idolize europe.

I do not think comparing peasants with coal mine workers is a fair comparison.
However!
After a bit of googling, I found out that the average life span of coal mine workers in the 18:th century was between 30-40 years, and the average life span of peasants around the year 1100 was 30-35,

1000 USD? What a bargain! For some parts of my life I've paud 60%-70% in taxes. I would have loved to pay only 1000 USD for health insurance. That would have been heaven on earth!

I don't like the minarchist position and I do not consider it libertarian.
The reason is they are 1. in favour of taxes and 2. they cannot explain how to stop the state from growing, once it has a monopoly on violence.
Therefore I find it an untenable position from a theoretical point of view.

Towards the end of the period, the merchant class started its rise to power, and that seems to me the start of improvement for the common man, and the nobility started to lose power, at least in the trading port cities.

I'm currently reading the short oxford history of europe, the central middle ages, and this is not correct according to the book.At least not between 950 to 1320.
The nobility took control, and most serfs did not have a happy life. Note however, that this is not all, some had good relationship, some were able to purchase their freedom, but based on what we think of normal life today, all were pretty bad off.

Actually I find it more of an example of imperial thinking inherited from before the communists. Communism of course tends to develop into empire, with an emperor on top. Leftists are just too stupid to realize that.

Oh yes! Even people who remain on salary I encourage to at least think of themselves as entrepreneurs and one-person companies. That mindset brings more independence.

For being libertarian, it is strange that they have taxes. Sounds to me, that it is more a business with the government of Honduras as partner.
My own taxes are around 10%-14% and I live in europe, so don't see any value add moving to Honduras with those conditions.

Just to balance, I would like living in a society where I do not have free healthcare, because I would find it unethical, that someone would be forced to take care of me, regardless of how I choose to live my life.
I would much rather prefer private healthcare and pay for insurance.
That would also create a great incentive for me to take more care of myself and my body, thus offloading the health system.
