It’s a layer on top of bitcoin. You can swap bitcoin for ecash using a lightning payment on a ecash mint. The mint is like a bank.
The advantage of ecash is it’s very private. There is no blockchain that records the transaction. Payments are instant. And you don’t even have to be online to make a payment.
