Last Notes npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker 😠It doesn't work. Not sure if it's a design flaw or bad soldering, but my guess is that I messed something up in the schematic. Send me some love to console me. 😫 npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker Here's the board with a dime for size comparison, and another shot of it fully assembled. https://image.nostr.build/a6186ad397a01b8163e2bddfec2ee639ad9123b62eeb9c9a216c8046c814b120.jpg https://image.nostr.build/5e2255ce286b699f2d397d8fbc38d650fdcd07211a02336f06042d21e7b2afe2.jpg #nevent1q…4qnt npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker And I am also going to be prototyping a new breakout board for the humidity/temperature/barometric pressure sensor. This doesn't feel like it's $40 worth of components right here... https://image.nostr.build/5f8b17908da3a37d4ccd7d9d4518bd25a4ea656c79c6150015f90fce4ef9a907.jpg #OpenSource #electronics #hardware #nevent1q…lswg npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker I just got some new #HestiaPi prototype boards in. There is only acouple small modifications: 1. The reset switch cuts power, makong it compatible with a Pi Zero, Pi Zero 2, and possibly also the pi zero clones 2. Require a sockrt for the pi, and can use headers soldered onto the top instead of requiring them onnthe bottom 3. Done in KiCAD instead of some online tool (eliminating the risk of not being able to modify the PCB if the site ever goes under or discontinued their free tier, etc.) The next question is: does it actually work? The components I'll need to test it should arrive in the next few days and then we will find out. #OpenSource #IoT #hardware #FOSS #software npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker AirGradient answers the question about why they don't have any salespeople: https://www.airgradient.com/blog/why-we-dont-have-any-sales-people/ It's a good little #philosophical read. #engineers #engineering #FOSS #hardware #OpenSource #OpenHardware #GrowNostr #sustainability npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker The closest thing I know of is Mozilla's independent analysis on the topic: https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/articles/its-official-cars-are-the-worst-product-category-we-have-ever-reviewed-for-privacy/ npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker Still no #RaspberryPi Zero 2 W boards in stock in America. I'm checking back a few times a week to try to get some when they are back in stock somewhere. In the meantime, I still have 3 #HestiaPi thermostats in stock if anyone is interested. If you know where I can get 10 Zero 2 boards for $15 each, please let me know. #Privacy #Freedom #SelfHosting npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker I have 4 #HestiaPi #thermostats left. After that, I'll be waiting on parts to be available at reasonable prices (namely the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W). I can use the original Zero, and they are available, but the Zero 2 is significantly faster and has a hardware Floating Point Unit (FPU) which is required for the JVM in Java >8 npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker I was hoping that I could make a new image for the pi zero 2 w that runs HA, but unfortunately HA requires lots of memory (not sure why... it's written in Python and is doing fairly simple automation tasks...). That way people could get all the automation without having to manage a server (at least, knowningly). I'm sure we'll find some solution that isn't just for the #selfhosting crowd and I'm confident that the Hestia32 will be a part of that. npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker The bottom line is this: If we want to have fech that isn't dystopian, we have to build it ourselves. #nevent1q…gcuv Now look, I don't make cars, but I do make #smart #thermostats that don't spy on you. #HestiaPi I'm also started to get involved with the #AirGradient One, which is an #OpenSource air quality monitoring system. Both projects are 100% #OpenHardware too. This is how I live. If you want nice things, build it or support someone who does. Or don't and just complain about it on social media instead. You do you. npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker It was designed to be the central hub for all home automation, allowing people to integrate all their other IoT devices with the HestiaPi. So you could have heat turn off if no motion was detected inside, blinds close if the temperature outside is drastically different than inside, or whatever crazy logic you want based on the gear you have. Also, it was created over 5 years ago, when the ESPs were not as popular or well supported as they are today, and the rPi pico didn't exist. However, we do have an effort to make an ESP32 based model (Called Hestia32) with very limited functionality. It'd just allow control via wifi and a screen to use it locally. No interaction with other #IoT gear, no ability to add complex logic with a few lines of javascript. The goal is to allow people to have this cheap option if they don't need anything fancy, but if they do have the HestiaPi, they can work together and you can do the fancy stuff. Help wanted, in case you want to join in. 🤓 npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker Well, the Raspberry Pi is British so this is not the case of an American company outsourcing manufacturing, but point taken. If these problems continue, it might be enough to push me over the edge to try to use a pin-compatible board. For example, the Orange Pi is normally more expensive, but given the supply problems, it's getting close... https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805830546418.html?spm=a2g0n.store_m_allProduct.allProducts_2002618331567.3256805830546418&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker Good news: I updated my inventory on the #tindie store. #HestiaPi thermostats in stock! Bad news: #RaspberyPi Zero 2 W boards are not available in the US, and the international stores generally have higher prices, higher taxes (VAT), and more expensive shipping. I'm going to wait and see if they become available before my current supply is completely sold out. I thought these days were behind us when I saw stores inventories replenished and purchase limits lifted a while back. #IoT #FOSS #OpenSource #Hardware #Privacy npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker Turns out, it was a lie. 😢 They no longer accept #bitcoin and #bitpay just never updated their site to reflect this. #nevent1q…ntnw npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker #TIL I can buy raspberry pi boards using #bitcoin! Ot'd be super cool to be able to sell #HestiaPi thermostats for bitcoin and then get that #CircularEconomy going. https://thepihut.com/ I'd also be hapy to sell #smart thermostats for #monero, swap it for bitcoin and then use that to buy components. #IoT #OpenSource #hardware #FOSS npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker The answer is about $60 Why? The minimum order is 3 boards and it's $49.95 for those 3 boards. Then it's $5 shipping plus sales tax and we're at $60. If the design was perfect, I'd have paid $20/board. If there was a problem with the design, and I got it right on the second try, I'd have paid $120 ($40/board). Buying in bulk can get the price down to about $11.50/board. Ordering from China (larger quantities and waiting a month) can get it lower, but doesn't make sense for prototyping. npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker I think people underestimate how much it costs to get a PCB made if they've never done it. For example, I have a 3.54" x 2.83" board (2 layers) and I want one of these made to make sure my design is good. How much would you expect to pay? (answer is in my reply) npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker I've uploaded a picture of the white case so people can see that it is not completely flawless. https://www.tindie.com/products/eternalsunshine/hestiapi-one-silent/ Speaking of other colors, I was contemplating trying a translucent case using the so-called "clear" filament. #nevent1q…l22z npub1ydhmq6k7zshd5chdfrmpqpy44jyn02z7amw98knaqascw2flnpzq5serpq Hestia Hacker Bad luck this week. Yesterday it was a defective pi, today it was a short circuit in a power converter! It damaged a PCB (whose trace acted like a fuse), but I was able to repair that Normally it takes like 30 minutes to build one unit, but these two have taken well over 2 hours on account of all the troubleshooting and re-work that had to be done. I don't expect bad components, so the first thing I look for are mistakes that I made. Maybe those days are behind me and I should check parts now? #nevent1q…guvp
